Last month, several of our cadets joined a select group of outstanding high school juniors from across Florida who participated in the 2025 sessions of Florida Boys State and Florida Girls State, two of the nation’s most respected civic education programs, sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.
From June 15–21, delegates of Florida Boys State gathered at Florida State University for a week-long, hands-on immersion into local, county, and state government. Known as “citizens,” the students formed a simulated state complete with cities and counties, where they ran for office, drafted and debated legislation, and practiced real-world civic leadership—all within a non-partisan framework. Participants were assigned to one of two fictional political parties, the Nationalists or Federalists, to ensure an educational and unbiased experience.
Representing Nease at Boys State were Cadets Collins, Cummings, Hager, Labardee, Montgomery, Spence, Spore, and Weidower.
Florida Girls State, held June 19–27, offered young women a similar opportunity to explore the political process. Citizens created a fictional state called Seminole, complete with 10 cities and 5 counties. Throughout the week, they participated in elections, engaged in policy debates, and passed legislation—all while deepening their understanding of democratic principles and the responsibilities of citizenship.
Representing Nease at Girls State were Cadets Arceo, Castellon, Ferreira, Heiry, Huenefeld, Jovel, Mitchell, Newman, Sletto, and Tokarek.
Both programs provided an unforgettable experience that emphasized leadership, civic responsibility, and public service. Congratulations to all 2025 delegates for representing their schools and communities with excellence and integrity!
